Is therapy right for my Teen?

When your child is struggling, it can be difficult to know what to do to help them. The teenage years can be difficult to navigate, not only for the teen, but for the entire family. If your teen is struggling with anxiety, depression, peer relationships, anger, struggles at school, difficulties at home, or a multitude of other issues, it may be time to get them some therapeutic support, and we can help. We work with teens to help them identify the root causes of their struggles, find new ways to cope and interact with others, and live happier, more fulfilling lives.

What if my Teen doesn’t want to come to therapy?

Therapy can be scary for anyone, but especially for teens who are struggling. Asking for help is typically not something adolescents do. We recommend that you inform you teen that they have to come to the first appointment, but that it will be up to them whether or not they return. This can be effective since out therapists are trained to help your teen feel heard and understood and therapy no longer seems so scary. In most cases, the teenager will typically then choose, on their own, to return to counseling, which makes therapy more affective because they are not being “forced” to continue.

What should we expect in therapy?

When we are working with a teen, we also involve the family in their care. Therefore, the first session will be with you and your child together for the first 15-30 minutes. We will then meet with your child individually, before brining you back in at the end. This helps to build a relationship with both you and your child. Our therapists will then work with your teen individually on a regular basis and will continue to check in with you, either by phone or in person, to make sure we are all working together to best support your child.

What types of issues do you typically work with?

We help teens struggling with a multitude of concerns, including depression, anxiety, peer and friend issues, school struggles, acting out behaviors, low self-esteem, family conflict, stress, trauma, LGBTQ and gender struggles, and many more. Give us a call today to talk to a therapist about your teen’s specific struggles and to see if we might be a good fit for you.
